May 13th 2013 Global Action week in Denmark

National News from Denmark by IBIS

Every year the Education for All campaign in Denmark celebrates the Global Action Week. This year we had an event planned the 25. April. However due to a teacher lockout we have had to postpone our event to the 23. May, since teachers and their students would not have been able to attend. This doesn’t mean that the Danish students have been left in the dark regarding the campaign of this year, though.

170.000 students have participated in the Danish Reading Rocket. The Reading Rocket is a school book that educates about interculturality, drawing examples from Latin-American and Africa. This year we have focused on the Latin-American country Nicaragua, and the need for educated teachers. Our campaign has run every spring for the past 10 years and continues to be very popular. Half of all Danish schools receive and use our materials.

In Denmark the working conditions and pay of the teachers is negotiated between the teachers union and the local districts association. This year they were not able to reach an agreement, resulting in the teachers being locked out all through April. They were not allowed to teach or even enter the schools. The Danish students hereby received a rare insight into what it’s like  not to be able to go school, as 61 million children experience every single day.

We have postponed our event to the 23. May. The Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt has agreed to attend and give a short speech. She has been gracious enough to agree to a rescheduling of the event. The event will take place in front of the Danish parliament in an attempt to remind all Danish politicians that the we are still lacking 1,7 million teachers, if all children are to receive a good education. Our hope is that a lot of students and their teachers will turn up, to support this important message. We also have fun activities planned out, among other things a dance the students will show the prime minister. We are looking very much forward to hosting the event, and hope for an informative and fun day for everybody.
